Bonjour, welcome to Les Toiles Blanches stock!

here is a beautiful unusual man work wear shirt that dates end of the 19th century.

The fabric is a fine homespun linen of good medium weight with a nubby texture and a nice ecru colour.

This model of shirt has a quite unusual shape with short shirt tails on both sides and is crafted with the fine classic details, a pleated pear shape front bib with pintucks on both sides of the placket and lovely gathers underneath, a short cut collar, gorgeous gathers on the back and at the wrists, opening buttons wrists.

This work wear shirt is a gorgeous timeworn condition with some marks of age that didn't fully washed, one tear inside the collar and some hand sewn mendings, see the picture, reflected in the price.

I have washed and pressed this beautiful shirt and it is ready to wear!

So arty to wear with jeans!

MEN'S SHIRTS, SMOCK

Antique French peasant's smocks are entirely hand made of linen and date from 19th century. Bourgeois men's shirts usually date from late 19th to beginning of the 20th century, around 1930 and are made of fil of linen or cotton sometime woven in twill. The classic details of antique shirts are a plastron, pleats or gathers on cuffs and neck, pintucks, a capuchin, round back tail, mother of pearl buttons, buttonhole or loop on the neck to maintain the detachable celluloïd collar men used to tye on the shirt. They are built long enough to comes to the knees. They make beautiful loose dresses, lovely to wear belted or not, summer and winter.

Textile Care

Antique linen is a living material, if you treasure it, it will reward you a hundred times. A lot of antique textiles are so robust and wonderfully easy to wash and maintain. The fibres of these exceptional fabrics were grown without any use of chemical, these textiles are organic. No need to use chemicals to wash antique textiles, a good simple natural soap such as the savon de Marseille is fine for every kind of linen. The textiles can be machine washed on warm. The warmer ithey will be washed, the softer and floppier they will turn. Again, no need to use a softener, a dash of white vinegar or a spoon of baking soda are perfect to maintain these wonderful textiles. Dry them on the line if possible, expose them under sun light to brighten the natural white.

information

The textiles I propose show signs of times, marks that are a moving, precious treasure which attests a bygone era. I will always try to describe them as accuratly as possible, giving many details, measurements and pictures to show the reality of the linen. Estimating the age of a fabric is not scientific but rather archeologic, many signs are useful, such as the stitches, the embroideries, the sewing, the colour, the texture, even the smell of the fabrics can help. Sometimes, the auctionneers or the owners give me precious information about the origin of the trousseau, monograms, name of the ancestors. Experience is also crucial to feel and judge the fiber content, the age, the origin or the use of the textile. I will strive to describe the textiles in the most complete way, using my honest judgement, having spent many years manipulating them.

Please note my textiles come from a smoke free house. When they are freshly laundered, the textiles have been washed with natural organic soap and sun dried on line . I recently started selling my treasures, new items will be on sale very often, so please keep your eyes peeled!
